Portland’s Japanese Garden sits atop the hill to the west of downtown Portland. This is perhaps one of the more picturesesque spots in Portland with moss-covered paths that wind their way through waterfalls and stoney trails.
Henry J. Pittock was a newspaper baron, son of immigrants and local to Portland around the turn of the century. His mansion which he started building when he was 74 was bought by the community and preserved as an historical site. Nestled in downtown Portland is a square block Chinese garden. Most all of the stone and plants were transported from China. The gardens replicate a scholars house emphasiIng the connection with nature.
The buildings in downtown Portland are beautiful! When a population is also environmentally conscious, it makes a big difference as per the cleanliness of a city.
