Henry J. Pittock was a newspaper baron, son of immigrants and local to Portland around the turn of the century. His mansion which he started building when he was 74 was bought by the community and preserved as an historical site. The house had many forward-looking ammenities including electirc power, room thermostats, and a central vacuming system. The most stunning feature was the beautiful madrble spiral staircase cascading the full four flights of the house. It stands as a monument to the history and the people of the area.
